Offizier-Gefangenenlager notes occupy a narrow and genuinely strange corner of German notgeld. This issue from the Cologne officer camp was printed by M. DuMont Schauberg — a Cologne publishing house still operating today — which places production firmly in the city rather than at some distant commercial printer. Officer PoW camps in the German system ran their own internal economies with surprising formality; the notes functioned as canteen currency, preventing cash from circulating outside the wire.
1918 production means this note was issued in the final months of the war, when the German internal monetary system was fracturing and camp administrations were increasingly improvising. Survival rate is high relative to circulation — these notes rarely left the camp economy at all.
