Lauenburg in Pommern — now Lębork in northern Poland — issued this Notgeld note in 1918 as the imperial supply chain collapsed and Reichsbank small change simply stopped reaching provincial towns. Municipal authorities across Germany stepped in to fill the gap, and the Magistrat here was no different. The 5 Mark denomination sits at the higher end of typical municipal emergency issues, which more commonly ran to fractional values.
The Grabowski/Mehl Geldscheine reference 310.01a suggests at least one variant exists within this issue.
