To the upper centre, the Turkish crescent and five-pointed star device is prominently displayed. These coins mark the first years of the Turkish Republic's decimal currency reform under Atatürk, issued as the new state systematically dismantled the Ottoman monetary system. The aluminium bronze composition was a deliberate departure from the nickel alloys favored by the late Ottoman issues — chosen partly for cost and partly as a visible material break from the old regime.
The series ran only three years before the composition was revised, making the window of production unusually narrow.
