The P#42 series replaced the earlier, larger-format 5 Kronor notes as part of Sweden's postwar shift toward more economical paper dimensions. Sveriges Riksbank had maintained oversized notes well into the 1940s, partly by institutional inertia and partly because Swedish public opinion associated larger paper with greater credibility — a bias the bank had quietly tracked through its own circulation studies.
Watermarking on this series was handled with particular care; counterfeit 5 Kronor notes had caused localized problems in southern Sweden during the late 1940s, and the revised watermark pattern introduced here was a direct response.
