Issued by the National Bank of Ukraine to mark the 35th anniversary of the Security Service of Ukraine — the SBU, established in 1991 as the successor to the Ukrainian KGB — this coin appeared while the SBU itself was actively engaged in wartime counterintelligence operations following Russia's full-scale invasion of February 2022. The institution had spent the years between independence and 2022 in contested transformation, with successive governments accused of failing to fully de-Sovietize its personnel and methods.
The 2022 invasion dramatically redefined the SBU's public profile and operational mandate, lending a piece like this an urgency that most institutional commemoratives never carry.
