Latvijas Banka launched its "Coin of the Seasons" series in 2014 as part of a broader push toward collector-focused issues following Latvia's accession to the Eurozone on January 1st of that year — the country's first year as a euro-adopting state. The timing was deliberate: a distinctly Latvian silver issue at a moment when the lats, in circulation since 1922 with interruptions, was being permanently retired.
KM#163 is the Spring installment, the first in the four-piece series, each released sequentially through the year.
