| Opis awersu | The Lion of Judah, the traditional symbol of the Ethiopian Empire, is depicted passant right at centre, wearing an imperial crown and raising its right foreleg to hold an upright staff bearing a ribboned cross. A Ge'ez legend encircles the upper field, with the Latin inscription 'EMPIRE OF ETHIOPIA' along the lower arc and the denomination 'E$5' to the right. The date '-1972-' appears in the lower exergual area, flanked by a small mint mark. The composition of Ge'ez and Latin scripts reflects the bilingual heraldic tradition of the late imperial coinage. |

Issued under the name of Empress Zewditu, who reigned from 1916 until her death in 1930, this coin is a retrospective commemorative — Ethiopia struck it over four decades after her reign ended, during the final years of Haile Selassie's rule. Zewditu was the first female head of state in modern African history and the daughter of Emperor Menelik II, though her effective power was substantially curtailed by the regent Ras Tafari, who ultimately succeeded her.
The 1972 date places production just two years before Haile Selassie was deposed by the Derg military junta, making this among the last Ethiopian silver issues of the imperial period.
