Reverse description A veiled bust of Empress Zauditu (Zewditu) is portrayed in right-facing profile at centre, wearing an ornate crown and traditional imperial regalia with elaborate decorative detailing at the collar. The effigy is rendered in high relief with fine sculptural detail to the veil and jewellery. A bilingual legend surrounds the bust, with Ge'ez script in the upper arc and the Latin inscription 'ZEWDITU EMPRESS OF ETHIOPIA' along the lower arc. The dates of her reign, '1916-1930', appear to the right of the effigy, commemorating Africa's first female head of state of a internationally recognised nation.
