The effigy is rendered in high relief with fine sculptural detail to the veil and jewellery. A bilingual legend surrounds the bust, with Ge'ez script in the upper arc and the Latin inscription 'ZEWDITU EMPRESS OF ETHIOPIA' along the lower arc. The dates of her reign, '1916-1930', appear to the right of the effigy, commemorating Africa's first female head of state of a internationally recognised nation. |
