Australia was one of the critical relay points in the Apollo 11 transmission chain — the Honeysuckle Creek tracking station near Canberra acquired the initial lunar surface footage before NASA switched to Parkes Observatory for the cleaner signal. The domed format here is a direct engineering choice to evoke the lunar surface curvature, a construction technique the Royal Australian Mint had been refining since its first domed issues earlier in the decade.
The partial nickel plating over .999 silver creates the stark monochromatic contrast without alloy substitution — a more technically demanding solution than simple two-tone striking.
