| Aversbeschreibung | The obverse of this domed proof coin presents a complex, multi-layered design against a darkened nickel-plated field evoking the blackness of space. At lower centre, within a circular cartouche, appears the fourth portrait effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, shown as a right-facing draped bust wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, with the legend 'ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2019' and the engraver's initials 'IRB' below the truncation. Surrounding the effigy, excerpts of astronaut Neil Armstrong's first-hand lunar surface observations are pad-printed in fine text across the field, evoking the historic transmission from the Moon. To the upper left, a detailed depiction of the cratered lunar surface is rendered in relief, while to the right a Parkes Observatory radio telescope dish — instrumental in relaying Apollo 11 transmissions to the world — is shown in high relief. The denomination 'FIVE DOLLARS' arcs prominently along the upper border in bold raised lettering. |

Australia was one of the critical relay points in the Apollo 11 transmission chain — the Honeysuckle Creek tracking station near Canberra acquired the initial lunar surface footage before NASA switched to Parkes Observatory for the cleaner signal. The domed format here is a direct engineering choice to evoke the lunar surface curvature, a construction technique the Royal Australian Mint had been refining since its first domed issues earlier in the decade.
The partial nickel plating over .999 silver creates the stark monochromatic contrast without alloy substitution — a more technically demanding solution than simple two-tone striking.
