| 正面描述 | Right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, the third portrait as designed by Raphael Maklouf, depicting the Queen wearing the George IV State Diadem and a draped neckline. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs along the upper left periphery, with AUSTRALIA along the upper right. The denomination 5 DOLLARS is inscribed along the lower field, and the initials RDM appear to the right of the portrait, attributing the design to the sculptor. A beaded border frames the entire obverse. |

The Perth Mint's kangaroo bullion series, launched in 1986 as the "Nugget" before rebranding around the kangaroo motif, was a direct commercial response to the South African Krugerrand's international dominance. Australia's .9999 fineness gave it a purity edge over the Krugerrand's .9167, a selling point aggressively marketed to European buyers during the late apartheid-era trade restrictions that complicated Krugerrand distribution. The 1/20 oz denomination was aimed squarely at entry-level bullion buyers and gift markets.
Ian Rank-Broadley's third effigy of Elizabeth II replaced the Raphael Maklouf portrait beginning in 1999 on most Commonwealth issues, but the Perth Mint transitioned on its own schedule.
