Australia's .9999 fineness gave it a purity edge over the Krugerrand's .9167, a selling point aggressively marketed to European buyers during the late apartheid-era trade restrictions that complicated Krugerrand distribution. Ian Rank-Broadley's third effigy of Elizabeth II replaced the Raphael Maklouf portrait beginning in 1999 on most Commonwealth issues, but the Perth Mint transitioned on its own schedule.
