Obverse description Right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, the third portrait as designed by Raphael Maklouf, depicting the Queen wearing the George IV State Diadem and a draped neckline. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs along the upper left periphery, with AUSTRALIA along the upper right. The denomination 5 DOLLARS is inscribed along the lower field, and the initials RDM appear to the right of the portrait, attributing the design to the sculptor. Additional information

The Perth Mint's kangaroo bullion series, launched in 1986 as the "Nugget" before rebranding around the kangaroo motif, was a direct commercial response to the South African Krugerrand's international dominance. Australia's .9999 fineness gave it a purity edge over the Krugerrand's .9167, a selling point aggressively marketed to European buyers during the late apartheid-era trade restrictions that complicated Krugerrand distribution. The 1/20 oz denomination was aimed squarely at entry-level bullion buyers and gift markets.

Ian Rank-Broadley's third effigy of Elizabeth II replaced the Raphael Maklouf portrait beginning in 1999 on most Commonwealth issues, but the Perth Mint transitioned on its own schedule.
