The Bank of Central China was a Communist-administered institution operating in the Liberated Areas during the final phase of the Second Sino-Japanese War. Notes from this bank circulated in regions where Nationalist currency was either unavailable or actively rejected, functioning as a parallel monetary system in territory the CCP was consolidating ahead of the postwar civil conflict with the Kuomintang.
The S-prefix in the Pick reference places this squarely among the regional wartime issues — provisional, often crudely produced, and printed under conditions far removed from any established commercial printer. Survival rates for lower-denomination paper from these administrations tend to be poor; the notes were used hard in rural economies with little incentive for preservation.
