The crowned arms are rendered in a robust late Renaissance engraving style characteristic of hammered Italian coinage. Francis Maria II della Rovere ruled Urbino for decades but abdicated in 1621 in favor of his son Federigo Ubaldo — a dynastic calculation that ultimately failed when Federigo Ubaldo died the following year without a male heir. Francis Maria then resumed rule, but the line was effectively finished. At his death in 1631, the Duchy of Urbino was absorbed by the Papal States under Urban VIII, making this entire coinage among the final output of an independent Urbino mint before its permanent closure.
