Smolensk's place in Russian memory is inseparable from catastrophe — sacked by Napoleon in 1812, then nearly obliterated during the Wehrmacht's advance in 1941. The city was under German occupation for over two years before Soviet forces retook it in September 1943. This coin was issued as part of the Bank of Russia's long-running "Ancient Towns of Russia" commemorative program, which has produced hundreds of similar silver pieces since the 1990s.
