Emmanuel-Philibert struck this issue following the Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis in 1559, which ended decades of French occupation and restored Savoyard sovereignty over the duchy. Reclaiming his territory meant rebuilding its institutions from scratch — currency reform was among his first acts, and the 3 Gros series was central to reestablishing a functioning monetary system for a population that had lived under French administration since 1536.
The third type designation reflects how rapidly his early coinage evolved as the Chambéry and later Turin mints adjusted to renewed independent production.
