The figure is executed in golden silhouette against a darkened field, faithfully evoking the aesthetic of Attic vase painting. The design is enclosed by a continuous Greek meander (key pattern) border running along the inner rim, itself framed by the coin's polished outer edge. The hoplitodromos — a footrace run in full armor — was one of the more brutal additions to the ancient Olympic program, introduced in 520 BC and contested through the end of the ancient Games. The BEAC's commemorative series leaned heavily on classical athletic subjects during the mid-2010s, targeting the European collector market ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympics rather than commemorating anything specific to Central African monetary history.
Gold-plated silver issues of this type were struck in limited quantities for the numismatic trade and saw no circulation across the six BEAC member states.
