The hoplitodromos — a footrace run in full armor — was one of the more brutal additions to the ancient Olympic program, introduced in 520 BC and contested through the end of the ancient Games. The BEAC's commemorative series leaned heavily on classical athletic subjects during the mid-2010s, targeting the European collector market ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympics rather than commemorating anything specific to Central African monetary history.
Gold-plated silver issues of this type were struck in limited quantities for the numismatic trade and saw no circulation across the six BEAC member states.
