Macau's lunar gold issues occupy an odd corner of the market — produced by a jurisdiction whose currency has been pegged to the Hong Kong dollar since 1977, with monetary policy effectively delegated to Lisbon and then Beijing in succession. The 2011 rabbit issue was struck for the Chinese diaspora collector market rather than any domestic monetary function, a pattern Macau has followed consistently since the 1980s to generate seigniorage revenue from numismatic sales.
The rabbit holds particular resonance in Cantonese-speaking communities, associated with the Mid-Autumn Festival and the lunar deity Chang'e.
