South Ossetia's declaration of independence in 2008 was recognized by Russia, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Syria, and a handful of other states — and rejected by the overwhelming majority of the international community, which continues to regard the territory as part of Georgia. The National Bank of South Ossetia operates without IMF membership or broader international recognition, meaning these issues exist in a peculiar numismatic limbo: legal tender by declaration, collector curiosities by reality.
The Russian ruble circulates as the de facto currency on the ground. No meaningful domestic monetary system backs these coins.
