Süderbrarup is a small market town in Schleswig-Holstein, and this note dates from the peak years of German municipal Notgeld — the emergency small-change issues that flooded the country after coin metal disappeared from circulation during and after the First World War. By 1921 the phenomenon had evolved from genuine necessity into something more deliberate: municipalities and local authorities were printing attractive series specifically to be collected and sold to philatelists, generating revenue in the process. Whether this particular issue circulated seriously or was primarily a collector piece is difficult to determine without survival data, but the 1921 date places it squarely in that ambiguous period.
