The denomination numeral '25' appears in large red characters at each lower corner, with the date 'Wernigerode a. Wernigerode's 1920 Notgeld issue was part of the massive wave of municipal emergency money that flooded Germany as the Reichsbank struggled to keep small-denomination coinage in circulation following wartime metal requisitions and postwar hoarding. Louis Koch of Halberstadt was a regional printer who handled numerous Notgeld contracts for towns throughout the Harz area during this period — a practical choice of proximity over prestige.
Wernigerode's series is moderately collected today, largely on the strength of the town's tourist appeal rather than any particular rarity in the printing run.
