Flanking the shield are two decorative column pedestals, each surmounted by a grotesque mask and bearing a polychrome medieval figure in green livery; foliate ornaments fill the lateral panels. Wernigerode's 1920 Notgeld issue was part of the massive wave of municipal emergency money that flooded Germany as the Reichsbank struggled to keep small-denomination coinage in circulation following wartime metal requisitions and postwar hoarding. Louis Koch of Halberstadt was a regional printer who handled numerous Notgeld contracts for towns throughout the Harz area during this period — a practical choice of proximity over prestige.
Wernigerode's series is moderately collected today, largely on the strength of the town's tourist appeal rather than any particular rarity in the printing run.
