Tajikistan introduced its somoni currency in October 2000, replacing the Tajik ruble at a rate of 1000:1 — a belated stabilization measure after years of civil war and hyperinflation that had rendered the ruble nearly worthless. The diram subdivisions, including this brass piece, were part of that inaugural coinage series designed to rebuild confidence in a functioning monetary system.
A magnetic steel version of this denomination was issued concurrently, which is why the non-magnetic attribution matters for proper cataloging. The two types are otherwise difficult to distinguish without a magnet.
