The three card characters, identifiable by the spade, ace, and club suit markings on their livery, hold paintbrushes and a bucket of red paint, rendered in vibrant polychrome enamel coloring. Behind them rises a large heart-shaped rose bush, its blooms colored red against a silver-toned leafy background. Cook Islands has issued legal tender under its own authority since 1972, but the vast majority of its modern commemorative output is produced for the collector market by external minting houses and never circulates on the islands.
