Illana is a small municipality in the province of Guadalajara, Castile. During the Spanish Civil War, hundreds of local councils across Republican-held territory issued their own emergency paper fractional currency — billetes de necesidad — when the flight of metallic coin made small change essentially impossible to obtain.
