Deodoro da Fonseca proclaimed Brazilian independence from the Portuguese monarchy on November 15, 1889 — though historians have long debated whether it was a genuine republican conviction or a response to the abolition of slavery the previous year, which had cost the military its landowner support base. He served as the republic's first president but resigned after less than two years, having dissolved Congress and faced near-immediate impeachment threats.
The bronze-plated steel composition replaced a prior stainless steel version as Brazil worked to reduce minting costs following chronic inflationary pressure through the 1990s.
