Perinthos, the Thracian city on the Propontis, maintained striking autonomy through much of the Hellenistic period despite repeated interference from Macedon and later Bithynia. Philip II famously failed to take the city in 340 BC after a prolonged siege, its steep peninsular topography proving decisive. By the first century BC, civic bronze issues like this one were functionally municipal currency, circulating alongside Seleucid and Roman Republican silver without formal integration into either system.
