Monte Melkonian was an Armenian-American guerrilla commander who led forces in the Nagorno-Karabakh war before being killed by a grenade in June 1993. His death was a significant blow to Armenian military operations, and he was posthumously awarded the title of National Hero of Armenia. This coin was issued five years after his death by the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, a state that has never achieved UN recognition — making its coinage a numismatic curiosity rather than a product of any internationally acknowledged monetary authority.
