To the left of the portrait, the dates 1957·1993 denote his birth and death years. Below the bust, three raised fists of varying sizes emerge from an olive branch, symbolizing resistance and struggle. The Armenian inscription ԱԿՈ ՀԱՅԱUՏԱՆ MԱՖЗOՒNQ appears to the right of the portrait, identifying the subject. A continuous Armenian legend encircles the entire composition along the rim, reading ՄՈՆԹԵ ՄԵԼՔՈՆՅԱՆ ՀԱՅԱUՏANԻ ԱԶGԱՅԻՆ ՀÉRO'Ն, honoring Melkonian as a national hero of Armenia.
