Iarbas seized the Numidian throne during the chaos following the death of Hiempsal II, briefly holding power with the backing of the Marian faction in Rome. His reign ended when Pompey arrived in Africa in 81 BC on Sulla's orders, defeated him militarily, and restored the pro-Sullan Hiempsal II — after which Iarbas was executed. The entire coinage of his reign falls within that narrow, violent window.
