| Obverse description | The obverse displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms at centre, featuring the quartered shield with castles and bezants (quinas), surmounted by a royal crown. Flanking the shield on each side are the characteristic Portuguese quinas roundels. The surrounding legend reads PHILIPPVS in Latin characters, identifying this as the host coin — a Portuguese tostão struck under King Filipe III of Portugal. The entire design is struck on a broadly flan of irregular shape, typical of hammered silver coinage of the period. |
