Jan Perner was the Bohemian railway engineer behind the original design of the first horse-drawn railway line between Linz and Budějovice, but he is remembered above all for his survey work on the Prague–Olomouc and Prague–Dresden trunk lines. He died in 1845 at thirty years old, after being struck by a locomotive during a track inspection near Pardubice — an accident that cost the Austrian rail network one of its most capable planners mid-project. The Czech National Bank issued this coin to mark the 200th anniversary of his birth.
