A vertical line bisecting the map represents the line of demarcation established by the Treaty of Tordesillas on 7 June 1494, shifted 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde Islands from the meridian originally decreed by Pope Alexander VI in 1493. Shaded regions on the map indicate the Portuguese sphere of influence, encompassing future Brazil to the west and Africa to the east, the latter further identified by the Arms of Portugal superimposed upon it. The Treaty of Tordesillas, signed in June 1494 between Portugal and Castile under papal arbitration, divided the undiscovered world along a meridian 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde Islands — a line negotiated specifically to protect Portuguese claims to a Brazil not yet officially encountered. Whether Lisbon already knew of South American landmass when pressing for that particular longitude remains one of the more durable debates in Iberian historiography.
This coin was issued on the treaty's 500th anniversary.
