| Popis líce | A stylized map of the Atlantic Ocean dominates the field, flanked by two period sailing vessels rendered in relief. A vertical line bisecting the map represents the line of demarcation established by the Treaty of Tordesillas on 7 June 1494, shifted 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde Islands from the meridian originally decreed by Pope Alexander VI in 1493. Shaded regions on the map indicate the Portuguese sphere of influence, encompassing future Brazil to the west and Africa to the east, the latter further identified by the Arms of Portugal superimposed upon it. The circular legend REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA and the denomination 200 ESCUDOS appear around the periphery. |
