The Royal Canadian Mint's habit of issuing gold tributes to iconic American coin designs occupies a peculiar corner of the numismatic market — these are neither replicas nor originals, but licensed commemoratives that exist primarily because collector demand for the Peace Dollar aesthetic consistently outstrips what the U.S. Mint itself produces. The platinum plating over .9999 gold is an unusual technical choice, applied to evoke the silver appearance of the 1921 prototype relief without sacrificing the underlying metal value.
Anthony de Francisci's original design was approved under pressure from the newly formed Commission of Fine Arts in late 1921, with striking commencing just days before the calendar year closed.
