Railway administrations across Germany were authorized to issue emergency currency — Notgeld — during the hyperinflation crisis of 1923 as the Reichsbank simply could not print fast enough to meet demand. The Reichsbahndirektion Karlsruhe was one of dozens of regional rail directorates that stepped into the void, effectively paying wages and settling local accounts with their own paper. By the time denominations reached the two-hundred-billion-mark range, notes were often worth less than the cost of printing them within days of issue.
The embossed seal was the primary authentication device — a practical choice when speed of production mattered far more than sophistication. Currency stabilization via the Rentenmark in November 1923 rendered the entire series worthless almost immediately.
