| Obverse description | Central raised disk with horizontally engine-turned (roulette) ground bearing the date 1838 in large serif numerals. The annular field surrounding the central disk carries the legend IMPERIO DO BRAZIL disposed around the circumference in bold raised capital letters. The entire design is enclosed by a finely toothed milled border. The coin is oriented so that the legend reads correctly from the top, giving the piece a medal-like presentation typical of Brazilian Imperial pattern coinage of the period. |
