| Obverse description | Central field dominated by the toughra (imperial calligraphic monogram) of the Mahdist ruler Abdullah ibn Muhammad, rendered in stylized Arabic script. The toughra is flanked and surrounded by a circle of crescent moon devices, lending the design a distinctly Islamic character. The denomination notation appears within the field in Arabic numerals and script. The entire central device is enclosed within a beaded inner border, itself surrounded by a reeded outer rim. The flan is irregular and the strike characteristically uneven, consistent with the primitive minting conditions at Omdurman. |
