The Chaco peso was one of roughly a dozen provincial quasi-currencies that flooded Argentina during the 2001–2002 economic collapse, when the federal government's convertibility regime crumbled and provinces could no longer meet payroll obligations in official pesos. These notes — formally called "Letras de Cancelación de Deudas" or similar instruments depending on the province — were used to pay government employees and suppliers, then accepted by local businesses under varying degrees of official pressure.
Casa de Moneda's involvement gave the series a degree of physical credibility that cruder provincial emissions lacked. The national mint printing emergency scrip for broke provinces is not a detail that ages well for any government.
