Obwalden, one of the smaller forest cantons, struck its own silver coinage only intermittently — the right was theoretically constrained by the Swiss Confederation's ongoing struggles to standardize currency across member cantons throughout the eighteenth century. The 1742 issue falls within a period when individual cantons still exercised enough monetary autonomy to produce locally distinctive denominations, however briefly.
