Ukrainian Railways traces its founding to 1861, when the first line — connecting Lviv to Przemyśl — opened under Habsburg administration as part of the Karl Ludwig Railway. The 150th anniversary issue commemorates an institution that expanded dramatically under Soviet industrialization and survived the transition to Ukrainian state ownership in 1991 largely intact, inheriting one of the densest rail networks in Europe.
KM#637 was struck at the Kyiv mint to the bank's recurring large-format commemorative specification. The .925 silver at this diameter and weight puts it firmly in proof collector territory — it was never intended for anything but display cases.
