One of thousands of Austrian municipal Notgeld issues, this 20 Heller note from Kematen an der Krems dates to the severe coin shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg economy. Small-denomination metal coinage had effectively disappeared from circulation by 1920 — hoarded, melted, or simply lost in the monetary chaos of the post-war transition — forcing even minor communes to print their own fractional scrip to keep local commerce moving.
The three signatories include a female deputy mayor, Anna Mayhofer, which is worth noting given the period. Gutenberg in St. Pölten handled numerous such regional commissions.
