Opmerkingen

Helfenberg is a small municipality in Upper Austria, and this 20 Heller note is a product of the postwar Notgeld wave that swept through German-speaking Austria and Germany between roughly 1919 and 1922. The Austrian krone had collapsed in purchasing power following the dissolution of the Habsburg empire, and small coin virtually vanished from circulation as hoarding took hold. Municipalities, merchants, and private businesses stepped in to fill the gap with locally issued emergency paper — thousands of distinct types, most in small denominations like this.

Upper Austrian Notgeld pieces from village-level issuers are among the more ephemeral of the type; print runs were modest and redemption periods short.
