The Trésorerie de Nouméa issues of 1943 were emergency wartime instruments produced after New Caledonia rallied to the Free French cause in September 1940. With normal banking channels severed and the colony's monetary supply dangerously thin, locally authorized treasury notes filled the gap while the broader Pacific franc system was reconstructed under Allied-aligned institutions.
P#57 is among the more elusive of the Nouméa wartime pieces — the short print run and the colony's small population meant few notes entered circulation in any volume, and survivors in collectible condition are genuinely uncommon rather than artificially scarce.
