The Chalicotherium rears up on its hind limbs in alarm, its open mouth conveying panic, while the predator bears its distinctive elongated sabre-like canines in attack posture. The composition is set against a richly detailed background of Tertiary-era vegetation, rocky terrain, and foliage rendered in fine sculptural relief. Part of Austria's "Tales and Legends" series, this 2014 issue draws on the folklore tradition that the Austrian Mint has mined periodically since the 1990s as a way to sustain collector interest in its silver program. The .900 fineness is a deliberate nod to older Austrian coinage standards rather than the more common modern .925.
