Obverse description The obverse features a highly detailed relief depiction of a saber-toothed cat skull in profile, rendered with scientific precision to highlight the characteristic elongated upper canines and cranial structure. Below the skull, a horizontal timeline band divides the field, marking the Tertiary period from 66 million to 2.6 million years ago. The legend REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH arcs across the upper field, while the denomination 20 EURO and the date 2014 appear in the lower field alongside the period markers 66 MIO and 2,6 MIO. The inscription TERTIÄR is prominently placed, identifying the geological epoch that is the series theme.

Additional information

Part of Austria's "Tales and Legends" series, this 2014 issue draws on the folklore tradition that the Austrian Mint has mined periodically since the 1990s as a way to sustain collector interest in its silver program. The .900 fineness is a deliberate nod to older Austrian coinage standards rather than the more common modern .925.
