The Chalicotherium rears up on its hind limbs in alarm, its open mouth conveying panic, while the predator bears its distinctive elongated sabre-like canines in attack posture. The composition is set against a richly detailed background of Tertiary-era vegetation, rocky terrain, and foliage rendered in fine sculptural relief. The scene is enclosed within a raised circular border, with the entire design executed in a painterly, museum-quality engraving style characteristic of the Austrian Mint's prehistoric life series. |

Part of Austria's "Tales and Legends" series, this 2014 issue draws on the folklore tradition that the Austrian Mint has mined periodically since the 1990s as a way to sustain collector interest in its silver program. The .900 fineness is a deliberate nod to older Austrian coinage standards rather than the more common modern .925.
